Day 43: Final Day of class (Monday)

Lesson Objectives

I. Review Speaking Activity (10 min)
For this part of the class, I will have you get into pairs to "compete" against other teams of two to see who can explain and guess the highest amount of cards. Each person will take a turn trying to explain a card they chose from the links below.

Steps:
1. Decide who will be PLAYER A and who will be PLAYER B and only open the link below that is provided for you. DON'T CHEAT AND OPEN THE OTHER PERSON'S LINK!

2. Carefully read the directions provided at the top.
3. Follow along as we do one practice round as a class.
4. Play until the teacher says stop!
5. Count your cards and share the total with the class.

III: Making Requests: Spoken and Written  (30 min)

A) Brief lecture on use of grammar to be more formal. Look to the handout titled, MAKING REQUESTS. Then I will have you do an activity where you need to circulate the room to practice using the formal grammar in context: MAKING REQUESTS ACTIVITY

B) Written Requests. We will first look to the handout titled, EMAIL ETIQUETTE BASICS and go over the basics. Then I will have you practice by writing in pairs into this EMAIL ETIQUETTE GOOGLE DOC.

Day 42: Presentation Day Four (Friday)

• Learn through observation of peer's presentations
• Provide and receive  feedback from peers on your performance

Here is a breakdown of the presentation process:
1) Presenter presents 5-7 minutes
2) Audience listens attentively// Presenter is being filmed
3) Student ends presentation  
4) Applause and presenter leaves room for 3-5 min
5) Collaborate in groups to provide feedback  and generate questions (Audience Tasks 1 & 2)
6) Write anonymous written feedback for the presenter (Audience Task 3)
7) Presenter reenters, Q&A takes place and teacher provides brief feedback. 

Examples of questions the audience can ask:

1.       A question that is outside the topic area

2.       A vague question

3.       A hostile question that challenges the speaker

4.       A mumbled question

5.       A statement (not a question at all!)

*At the very end of the unit, students will be given the written feedback and scores from both the audience and teacher.

Day 37: Presentation Language/Practice 

Monday Nov. 18

Objectives: Students will be able to:

• Discuss and evaluate the use of gestures, volume, and stage movement in the extremes of too much and too little of each feature.
• Recognize and practice typical spoken transitions between each slide to introduce, close, and connect each main point

PART I
[5 minutes] Presentation Warm-Up

To begin today’s class. I would like to start with a short PRESENTATION VIDEO CLIP. I will have you watch the video and identify any problematic areas with the delivery. We will discuss this as a class.

Next, I will place you into groups of three and distribute WARM-UP PRESENTATION CARDS. On these cards, a different “presentation delivery problem” is given. I will place the card face down for your group, you are to draw a card and act out your problem having the group guess the error. After 5 minutes, we will come together to discuss these common errors and provide corrections. Have fun! We will end this warm-up activity by reviewing these errors and providing correction on the PPT

PART II

[5 minutes] Presentation Language:

In this next part of today’s lecture, we will focus our attention on vocabulary that is common in presentations. You can follow along by clicking on or looking to the PRESENTATION LANGUAGE HANDOUT. I will present the vocabulary through the PRESENTATION LANGUAGE PPT.

PART III

[5 minutes] Individual Practice

Before we are asked to present to our classmates, I would like to give students 5 minutes to pull up their PPT and consider the some of the key points on delivery and vocabulary we have discussed today. Refer to the PRESENTATION PEER CHECKLIST as a guide.  

PART IV

[30 minutes] Small Group Practice

I will put you into groups of three. Follow these steps:

     1) Read the PRESENTATIONPEER CHECKLIST

     2) Decide what order students will present

     3) Elect someone to keep time.

     4) Each person should have 5-7 minutes only. STOP THEM!

     5) Provide 4-5 minutes of feedback

To end today’s class; I would like to cover these five points so that all students are fully aware of the presentation schedule, process, and grading.

·         Do not forget the SCHEDULE FOR PRESENTATIONS .

·         Coming prepared to present- place the PPT in your dropbox

·         Audience participation- Point deductions for tardiness and/or inattentiveness
