Day 9: Body Paragraphs PIE
Objectives: Students will be able to:
- Identify four common body paragraph patterns in academic writing and their different purposes
- Identify weak paragraphs and offer suggestions
- Take the PIE pattern into consideration in revising our body paragraphs.
Part I [15 minutes] PIE (9:00-9:15)
Given the type and length of essay that we are writing in this first unit, we will focus on PIE as the pattern for practice in this essay. Let's review the main points by looking to this PIE STRUCTURE PPT. This presentation reiterates some basic structures that are commonly found when developing points within essays. For my student who need to write about data, please refer to the WRITING ABOUT DATA RESOURCE. It has wonderful examples for both vocabulary and structure.
Part II [10 min] PIE Paragraph Worksheet (9:15-9:25)

Part III: PIE in a Standard Argument Essay (9:25-9:35)
Please click on this SAMPLES ARGUMENT PAPER and read it. We will analyze the structure of body paragraphs and how they relate/support the thesis statement.
Part IV: Writer's Help Paragraphs/Topic Sentences (9:35-9:50)
Please open Writer's Help and log in. Go to the assigned links and find Topic Sentences. Work to complete this in pairs. Be prepared to share your answers. We will also discuss other paragraph structures including those that do not have a topic sentence.

Part V: Self Analysis -Paragraph
Pull up your diagnostic essay onto the desktop. Select a paragraph and highlight it according to the PIE structure we have discussed. Do you have a solid topic sentence? You you have illustrations to support your point? Do you interpret or explain any of your illustrations?

Part III [15 min]: Other Common Paragraph Patterns
To start today's lecture on paragraph patterns, we will first look to four common types of patterns found in paragraphs. Note, there are many ways to write a good paragraph! Please click on the PARAGRAPH PATTERNS PPT and follow along.
Part IV [10 min]: Read to Identify
Working in pairs of two or three, read the last three slides from the PPT lecture or access the same paragraphs by clicking on the PARAGRAPH PATTERNS WORKSHEET and decide which pattern, if any, these paragraphs are following. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.
