Introduction to Summary Critique I

Teacher Instructions and Tasks
[15 min] PART I: Introduction to Concept of Research & Need for Critique
Before we get into the details of the components of the next major assignment, we are going to introduce the concept of research and the reasons it needs to be regulated and critiqued.
To begin, Pull up Slide 2 of the SUMMARYCRITIQUE I PPT as we go over the goals and six parts of the lesson for the day. Work together to answer the questions to slide 4 and share their answers with the class.
Option A: Video Clip Warm-Up
Next I would like you to watch this two minute VIDEO CLIP of famous research study called the Milgram Experiment. Before watching, look to the questions on slide 7 and consider these while watching the video. After the video hold a brief discussion on the three question from slide 7.
Option B: Need for Critique Examples Warm-up
Let's look at some examples in NEED FOR CRITIQUE SAMPLES. Here we will discuss both business and research that require the need for critique and discuss the needed rationale.

Slide 8. I will be passing out a Handout titled "Summary Critique Handout" Complete the section titled Warm up in pairs.
[5-10 min] Part II Definition of Summary Critique
Go through slides 9-12 with students. Here I will introduce the concept of a summary critique paper and where they are commonly found. Brainstorm to think of other places that critique is commonly found.
[20 min] Part III The Introduction Paragraph
Please refer to the SUMMARY CRITIQUE I HANDOUT and fill it out as we go along. The first part should be review as we have already covered summary writing introductions. We will go through slides 13-18 relatively quickly as students should already be familiar with the content from Unit 2. On slides 19-24, I will cover Transitional Thesis statements, which are a common type of thesis statement for critique papers.
Stop on slide 25 and fill out the HANDOUT.
[20 min] Part V: Introduce Research Article
Tell students that we will be critiquing our own research on the topic of Aspartame. Have them click on the link for the original research article. Have them work together in small groups to provide main points on the four sections of the paper: Introduction, Study, Results, and Discussion.
