Day 14: Summary Writing & Avoiding Plagiarism


Part I: [10 min] Quick Review
What elements did we discuss in the last class?
What are some important points to remember when summarizing?

We left off on TASK EIGHT. Please get back into your groups and complete the exercise as we go over the answers once again. Try to fix problematic reporting verbs/language and any language that may not be academic.

  Part II: [15 min] Read to Discover 9:10-9:25
Today we will pick up where we left on with our discussion of summary writing. You can click on The SUMMARY WRITING PPT to access the materials again.

Start on slide 16. In this last part of the class, you will be asked to read a short essay and identify the strengths and weaknesses of four summaries. Read individually and then work together to decipher the answers. Be prepared to share. Slides 17-19 reveal the answers. DO NOT GO AHEAD!

We will follow up this lecture with an activity from the handout, SUMMARY WRITING HANDOUT, Complete in groups and then we will discuss as a class.

Part III: [10 min] Introduction Assignment for Unit 9:25-9:30/5
Click on Assignment Directions under unit 2 and follow along. Access to the articles that we will be reviewing can be located under Unit 2. There are also short videos that introduce the idea.

Part IV: [15-20 min] Introduction to Plagiarism 9:30/5-9:50
What is plagiarism?

In small groups, try to come up with at least 3-5 types of acts that you consider as "plagiarism"? What reasons should plagiarism be avoided for you or your field? Be prepared to share your responses. We will then go over some of the basic acts that constitute as plagiarism. AFTER your discussion, we will look at the following plagiarism handout

[time permitting]
I am going to play a short 2 ½ minute video regarding plagiarism. I will place you into groups of four. After watching the video, work together to answer the corresponding VIDEO HANDOUT.  We will go over the answers together as a class followed by a discussion on the topic.
