Day 7: Outlining + Workshop
Monday, Sept 9th
Lesson Objectives:
- Understand how thesis statements drive the direction of an essay.
- Recognize components of outlining an Introduction, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion for a standard five paragraph essay.
- Practice constructing a standard outline for their own papers.
Announcements: Google Drive submission problems? If so, let's fix that now.
To begin today's class, we will "play" with our new online software: Writer's Help. Please log in HERE and go to Thesis Statements 2 and work to complete them in pairs.
Part II: Outline Sample (10-15 min)
Now that you have a rough thesis, it is time to create an outline that supports that thesis. Lets first look at this EXAMPLE OUTLINE and discuss it's structure as a class.
Potential Discussion Questions
- Do you have any advice that you would give to this student?
- Can you provide alternative ways to structure this essay?
Part II:: From Thesis to Outline Worksheet/Workshop (30 min)
Now that we have discussed both Thesis and Outlining, we are ready to thinking about how these can be applied to our own essay. Please refer the the THESIS TO OUTLINE WORKSHEET and follow along to the instructions. Time Permitting: Work together on a student essay to help them transform it into an outline shell.
